Never Let Me Go
October, 1863, the Civil War rages on after two and a half years. Rowan O’Clanahan picks up the scissors, cuts off her hair, and transforms into a Confederate soldier to run away from home after her brother. Now recovered from previous war injuries in a battle that killed their Da, Malcolm sneaks away to rejoin the war. Rowan’s dreams prompts her actions, dreams that foretell of her saving Malcolm in battle. She vows to do just that, with a promise to not only save him, but to get him back home.
Rowan passes her first test and is sworn in to the Confederate Army at Camp Patton, Asheville, North Carolina.
Within days, Rowan and Malcolm are in a fight for their lives in the Battle of Warm Springs, one of many challenges on the long road ahead. The harrowing journey takes them from the mountains and across the state, along the Great Dismal Swamp into Virginia and back, the same routes that the author’s great-grandfather and his two brothers took with Company K, North Carolina 25th Regiment.
Will Rowan’s true identity be discovered? Will either of them survive this brutal war? If so, will Rowan be able to make good on her promises?
